[ it hits him in a storm all at once -- homesickness, joy, and an intense sort of relief. for daichi's sake, he isn't happy that the other boy is also stranded here, of course not. but... selfishly? it's so good to know that he's here. daichi has always been a rock-solid source of strength and stability, and just the sound of his voice is enough to make things feel... like they're going to be okay.
and suga's just relieved that this is a voice call, because the feeling that socks him directly in the chest is so powerful that it sends tears stinging up to the corners of his eyes. but he can take a second, bury his face in his hands and take a breath, and his voice manages to sound steady when he finally replies. ]
... it really is you. [ a little laugh. ] You don't know how good it is just to hear your voice.
[This. The tenuousness in that voice, and the way he states exactly the way Daichi feels without knowingly doing so -- this is why he hadn’t hesitated to call Suga. Why it’d struck him in a funny, completely different way from Tanaka to even see that name listed here in the first place.]
Yours too. [Genuinely returned, though there’s something dull, flat, and impatient in that captain’s tone of his. It amplifies with his next question, voice steeling markedly:] Where are you?
[Most important of all.
He wouldn’t sound so grave, but this isn’t some school field trip or an away game. Definitely not a drill. Wherever they are is strange and foreign; not to mention, in the short time he’s been here, he’s already seen people degraded, manhandled and abused all over something as trivial as their hair color. His own is short, dark crop in good favor, (apparently, given where he lives and what he has), but from what he’s heard and witnessed....
Sawamura Daichi is a young man mature beyond his years; well-mannered, respectful, and typically composed under pressure. But if someone lays a hand on one of his crows -- especially Sugawara -- there will be hell to pay. And he’ll bring it straight to them.]
[ suga recognizes the steel in daichi's tone -- it's why he's so careful to keep his own light, seeking to soothe a little of that tension with his own levity. ]
Aah, let's see... [ he's getting a little better at navigating! slowly but surely. ] I think this place is called the Bifrons district? And the city's called Midas.
[ daichi isn't the only one with an overdose of parental concern, after all. ] I heard that some of these places can be pretty dangerous...
[ and then a little laugh! keep things light, keep things light. ] Not that I'm doubting that our fearless captain can take care of himself, of course!
[Bif-whatever -- that’s foreign to Daichi, and far lesser for him to concern himself with than the part that slams into him: Midas.
He’s in Midas.
It’s not surprising, given the information he’s gathered thus far through random acquaintances throughout this area, (Tanagura’s Eos Tower, he’s learned). But it isn’t any less unsettling just because it’s expected. Already, he’s on his feet and sliding on his shoes. There are some shuffling sounds on the line as he does so.]
I’m fine. [That cold steel is still there, though -- not directed at the setter, of course. Daichi’s just not thinking on it enough to dampen it.
Dangerous. Right. He doesn’t want to tell Suga that he’s in one of those places at present, from what the captain knows. But on the other end of that call, unseen, is the face of a dutiful man prepared to go toe-to-toe with whomever or whatever dares to stand in his way of getting there, and getting his teammate out.
There’s a little laugh on the line and some cheery commentary; Sugawara’s gentle way of placating, he knows. Not working right now, but nice try. Are you safe where you are? balks on the tip of his tongue. No, let him rephrase that--]
Dai~chi. [ softly, that perfect mix of teasing and sincere. ] You're letting yourself worry too much, aren't you? I'm fine.
[ he's met some unusual people so far, sure, but no one overtly dangerous. and whether that's the norm or his own good fortune is a pretty unimportant detail, as far as suga's concerned. ] Keep frowning, and you'll wind up with a face full of wrinkles.
[Can he really be blamed for his concern, when Suga clearly isn't worried enough? But, then again, Daichi's already seen some people accosted here in public -- and this is Tanagura, supposedly the "safe" part of Amoi. Surely Midas can only be worse.
It's that knowledge that lends itself to an absolute lack of recognition of, and tolerance for, any and all humor for the time being.]
I'm coming to get you.
[Submitted not for approval, but without room for discussion; spoken like a man on a mission.]
[ ... okay, to be fair, suga probably should have expected that. but he still blows out a little huff on his end of the line, caught somewhere between amusement and exasperation. he'd protest, insist that he can take care of himself just as well as daichi can, but...
when it comes right down to it, it'll be in one ear and out the other. there's no talking daichi down once Captain Mode kicks in. ]
Okay, okay. Just be careful, all right? [ voice as light as ever. ] Don't get yourself in trouble over nothing.
